History: 

Basionym of Sequoia sempervirens (D.Don) Endl.

Published in Desc. Pinus v.2 t.7 p.24 in 1824 where the author admits that having seen only one imperfect specimen, he is hesitant to refer it to the genus Taxodium. He names it sempervirens "from its evergreen leaves". Also in ed.3 #56.
