Published in Sketch Bot. S. Carolina (Elliott) 1: 429 in 1817. Elliott cites Catesby's Natural History Volume I Plate 45. (Also cited as Trillium cernuum L. in Sp. Pl. 1: 339-40 in 1753 but now considered a separate species.)
