Description: 

Short stems with densely clustered leaves, lanceolate, long petiole. Solitary flowers, yellow or blue-purple, to 2" diameter in summer.

From Bot. Reg. The blossom cannot be said to be fragrant, yet when smelled near, a bitterish, but not unpleasant odour is perceptible.

History: 

Introduced from Russia. Native to Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia and China.

Published in Bot. Reg. 1: 54 in 1815.

From Bot. Reg. Its introduction is known to have been from Russia; but we have not ascertained precisely the time when it came, by whom sent, nor by whom received.

Published for the first time in the Botanical Register.
