Deeply divided leaves that look like a bird's foot. Flowers are purple to dark blue on leafless stalks, in spring.

Well-drained soil. May self-seed.

History: 

Published in Sp. Pl. 2: 933 in 1753.

Native to Canada and the eastern and central US.
